Muchas veces mencionamos en nuestro discurso a los pequeños productores: hablamos de la importancia de apoyarlos en el acceso a  nuevas formas de mercado o nos referimos a iniciativas orientadas al mejoramiento de su calidad de vida. Así pues, ¿qué tal si tratamos de definir lo que es un pequeño productor?. Una tarea nada fácil, ya que no existe ninguna definición precisa ni universalmente aceptada.

Lo que muestran los indicadores

Por lo general, el primer criterio considerado para diferenciar un pequeño de un mediano o un gran productor es la cantidad de hectáreas de su cultivo. Según datos de la Confederación Internacional OXFAM, que trabaja en favor de la erradicación de la pobreza y la injusticia, en el mundo hay unos 400 millones de pequeños productores con acceso a menos de dos hectáreas de tierra para generar su sustento.

Sin embargo, es necesario tener en cuenta que el  término “pequeño” cambia según el contexto, el país e incluso el tipo de cultivo del que se trate. En México por ejemplo, un pequeño productor tiene en promedio menos de 20 hectáreas, mientras que en Haití tiene menos de 2.5 hectáreas. En el caso de Colombia se consideran pequeños productores a aquellos que tienen entre una y dos hectáreas, o incluso menos. Del mismo modo, una finca dedicada al cultivo de frutales como el banano o el café será  posiblemente mucho más grande que una dedicada al cultivo de productos básicos como trigo o arroz. Como vemos, la extensión resulta ser un factor relativo.

Por esto, frecuentemente es más significativo considerar al “pequeño productor” en términos de su limitada disponibilidad de recursos en comparación con otros productores del sector; es necesario analizar la situación de cada productor como una unidad dentro del contexto de su economía local, de su comunidad y sin dejar de lado las condiciones agro-climáticas en las que se encuentre.

Lo que dicen los investigadores

Un grupo de trabajo creado en Canadá en el marco del Organic World Congress en 2002, estableció un listado de aspectos que debe tenerse en cuenta para establecer quiénes son pequeños productores. De acuerdo con los resultados de este grupo, más allá de la cantidad de hectáreas con las que se cuenta, un pequeño productor es aquel que:

• tiene un sistema de producción bastante simple,
• usa principalmente mano de obra de su propia familia,
• tiene una limitada capacidad de mercadeo, una limitada capacidad de mantenimiento de registros, una limitada capacidad de comunicación y hasta una limitada capacidad de almacenamiento / procesamiento;
• tiene un promedio de ingresos anuales por el producto determinado por debajo de los 5000 dolares,
• gasta más del 2% del valor de la mercancía en inspección/ revisión externa.

Estas características, sin constituir una verdad absoluta, nos amplían un poco la idea de lo que significa ser un pequeño productor, ¿verdad?

Quizás la pregunta ahora sería, ¿por qué son importantes los pequeños productores?, ¿hacia dónde se dirigen los esfuerzos de apoyarlos?

El evento contó con la presencia de un público ricamente diverso: estudiantes, campesinos, representantes de las secretarías de agricultura y educación, empresarios, comerciantes, mujeres cabezas de familia… todos y todas con un interés común: el futuro del sector agropecuario en el país. Más de trescientas personas deseosas de participar del proyecto o de hacer seguimiento de sus adelantos se inscribieron en nuestro Frutisitio.org. Fue tanto el interés que el proyecto AESCE despertó, que los computadores instalados no dieron abasto y hubo necesidad de hacer inscripciones manuales simultáneamente.

¡Ya empezó la llamada “revolución de la producción de frutas en Colombia”!

We are proud to announce that Cropster.org will participate in this project with its platform Cropster C-sar, which will be fundamental in organizing information that will help determine the optimal conditions for growing tropical fruits in Colombia. This longterm project will have positive impact for Colombia showing the importance of tropical fruits to the national economy.

The project is led by the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) and the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Growers in Colombia (ASOHOFRUCOL), helped by Colombia’s National Research Program (CORPOICA), the Secretaries of the Fruit Chains and more than two thousand producers who will share their experiences on the growing process of the crops.

The initial focus of this research project is the supply chain for high value fruits like mango, avocado, orange, lemon, mandarin and plantain in Colombia. It seeks to gather information about each producer, in order to develop an information sharing network with thousands of other local farmers. An important goal is to identify methods of production that work well and those that don’t work well at different locations, in different regions but also in different seasons of year.

This dialogue between practice and scientific analysis, enabled by Cropster C-sar, will allow the creation of a learning network which will help us make better decisions and increase production, leading to a national expansion of fruit cultivation. The project intends to continue it’s self- sustainability after the initial three years.

Cropster C-sar becomes once again an important tool that facilitates decision making for the sake of the development of a sustainable agriculture in Colombia.

Nos llena de orgullo anunciar que Cropster.org  hará parte de esta grandiosa iniciativa con su plataforma Cropster C-sar, la cual será fundamental en la organización de toda la información que ayudará a determinar cuáles son las condiciones óptimas para el crecimiento de frutas tropicales en el país, una perspectiva sumamente positiva para Colombia debido al inmenso potencial de este renglón de la economía nacional.

En este proyecto liderado por el Centro Internacional de Agricultura Tropical (CIAT) y Asociación Hortifrutícola de Colombia (ASOHOFRUCOL), participarán también la Corporación Colombiana de Investigación Agropecuaria (CORPOICA), las secretarías de cadenas frutales y más de dos mil productores que compartirán sus experiencias en los procesos de cultivo de frutas.

El foco inicial de este proyecto de investigación serán las cadenas productivas de mango, aguacate, cítricos y plátano en Colombia. Se busca recopilar la información de lo que hace cada productor, conectarla con la información de lo que hacen otros miles de productores y así poder identificar patrones de lo que funciona, lo que no funciona, dónde y cuándo. Este diálogo entre la práctica de los productores y el análisis científico, mediado por Cropster C-sar, permitirá crear una red de aprendizaje gracias a la cual podrá tomarse decisiones, aumentar la  producción y favorecer así una expansión nacional en el área de cultivos frutales. Se trata de un programa que espera continuar siendo auto-sostenible más allá de los tres años en los que el proyecto AESCE se tiene prevista su duración.

Today we are celebrating our 3rd birthday. Exactly 3 years ago, on a clear sunny day (well as far as I remember it was like this) in Cali, Colombia we made the decision to form what’s now Cropster. Back then we just had a vision, a desire to make it true and most of us more hair. We weren’t sure if the agriculture sector is yet ready for a transformation nor if the industry would share the concept of linking small hold farmers to markets.

Three years later we see a hugh shift towards supply chain transparency, through food safety regulations and increasing consumer interest in production methods and product provenance. This movement takes the industry by storm and we are happy to be part of it.

Therefor I want to thank everyone for making this possible. Earlier today we also got a very motivating present: We are officially nominated for the Austrian Constantinus Award in the category “Sonderpreis Jungunternehmer” (=Startup-Companies). The winner will be announced on the 10.06.2010. So – THUMBS UP!

Cropster nützt „The Hub Vienna“ als Hub in Wien für Social Business und Networking

Zum Start der „Beta-Phase“ im „The Hub Vienna“ fand die offizielle Eröffnung am 25. März statt. Eine Menge Interessierter fand sich ein um beim Start eines für Wien einmaligen Projekts dabei zu sein.

Auch Cropster nützte die Aufbruchstimmung und ist von Beginn an „connected“ mit einer sich entwickelnden Social Entrpreneurship-Szene in Wien. Das Motto von „The Hub Vienna“ ist: „An inspiring place for people with ideas for a better world to work, meet, learn, connect.“

Der Online Standard (vom 06.05.2010) schreibt u.a.: „Verkehrte Welt im wirtschaftlichen Denken: Oberste Priorität hat der Nutzen für die Menschen, nicht – wie gewohnt – der Profit. Diese Idee greifen Social Businesses auf. Maßgeblich entwickelt hat dieses Wirtschaftskonzept Friedensnobelpreisträger Muhammad Yunus. Es ist ein Geschäftsmodell, das auf die innovative Lösung sozialer Probleme mit unternehmerischen Mitteln abzielt – und das langfristig. In Österreich gibt es ein paar große Vorreiter, die zeigen wie es funktionieren kann und eine neu eröffnete Plattform bietet Raum für kleinere Unternehmen.“ (Siehe Artikel)

Auch der Kurier (Printausgabe vom 08.05.2010) berichtet über die unterschiedliche Art des Zusammenarbeitens in diversen Gründercentern in Wien (Siehe Artikel).

Cropster schafft und betreibt ein internetbasiertes, dezentrales Informationssystem, welches die ganze Wertschöpfungskette von hochwertigen Agrikulturprodukten abbildet. Die Methodik fokussiert auf einer Stärkung eines jeden Teilnehmers in der Beschaffungskette, indem geholfen wird die Kommunikation sowie die Produktion und Produktqualität zu verbessern, Qualitäten zu charakterisieren, Produktions- als auch Absatznischen zu identifizieren und durch eingebaute „Feedbackschleifen“ gemeinsam zu lernen.

Cropsters langfristige, soziale Vision ist die Unterstützung einer nachhaltigen Landwirtschaft – „Supporting Sustainable Agriculture“. Daher sind wir überzeugt mit „The Hub Vienna“ den richtigen Partner gefunden zu haben!

Zum offiziellen Start Anfang Mai wollen wir herzlich gratulieren. Wir wurden schon mit einigen spannenden Themen, Vorträgen, Events überrascht und freuen uns daher auf eine spannende Zusammenarbeit für die Zukunft.

Für das neu gegründete Qualitätsprogramm gut so! wurde auf die erprobte Softwarelösung C-sar aufgebaut, um sämtliche Stufen der Produktionskette für gut so! zertifizierte Lebensmittel zu verwalten und gleichzeitig für den Konsumenten nachvollziehbar und transparent zu gestalten. C-sar integriert kleinbäuerliche betriebsübergreifende Strukturen, Verarbeiter und Zertifizierungsstellen in eine gemeinsame Produktionskette und schafft durch die dadurch mögliche Abstimmung neue Effizienz für diese Unternehmen.

Das Kreative an dieser neuen Lösung ist die einzigartige Kombination der Projektpartner: Aus der Verbindung der Fachkenntnisse der fairea gmbh im Bereich hochwertige Lebensmittel (umfassender Ansatz = 5 Qualitätsdimensionen) und der bereits international erprobten Software C-sar für die gesamte Wertschöpfungskette entstand ein ganz neues Produkt.

Weitere zentrale Aspekte für beide Projektpartner waren und sind die soziale Verantwortung und die Nachhaltigkeit bzw. deren langfristige Auswirkungen auf Wirtschaftlichkeit und Gesellschaft. fairea hat eine hochqualitative, IT-basierte Anwendung erhalten, die jederzeit flexibel auf neue Produktgruppen/Produzenten erweiterbar ist. Cropster.org erweitert dadurch sein Geschäftsmodell um drei wesentliche Aspekte:

1. Es ist das erste Mal gelungen, am österreichischen/europäischen Markt Fuß zu fassen.
2. Es ist das erste Mal gelungen, einen Kunden außerhalb der Kaffee-Wertschöpfungskette zu gewinnen (bisherige Produktlinien: C-sar Producer, C-sar Roaster und C-sar Research)
3. Es ist das erste Mal gelungen, eine Kooperation mit einem Anbieter eines Qualitätszeichens/-labels (gut so!) einzugehen, um C-sar als verbindendes Warenrückverfolgungssystem zu positionieren. C-sar Certifier wird als neue Produktlinie aufgebaut, um ein zusätzliches Standbein für die Zukunft zu schaffen.

Wir haben mit der fairea gmbh einen wichtigen Kunden gewonnen und es gemeinsam geschafft, Themen wie Nachhaltigkeit und soziale Verantwortung einerseits und webbasierte Informationstechnologie und Wirtschaft andererseits “neu” zu kombinieren.

Our Answer: We provide linkages between producers and buyers. The use of bi-directional information channels and mutual feedback loops amongst supply chain partners will better balance the supply chain, introduce new efficiencies and enable positive learning processes.

Our product – C-sar: C-sar is an internet-based-plattform with different modules for different parts in the coffee value chain. At the moment we offer the product packages C-sar Producer and C-sar Roaster for commercial use and C-sar Research for research-partners/organisation and development cooperations/institutions.

Our Goal: On one hand we promote a transparent, fair and affordable way especially for (smallholder) farmers to get an entrance for their specialty coffee to the global market and to manage there information flow in a professional way (C-sar Producer). On the other hand we developed sophistacated tools for our partners at the other end of the coffee value chain following all the the ideas mentioned above (C-sar Roaster).

In Cooperation with the German Genesis Institute the Zukunftszentrum Tirol organised a kick off meeting with the topic “Social Business/Sozialunternehmen”. Well known social entrepreneurs opened the very successful event as key note speakers with the following program (German).

The most important goal of the event was starting to spread the idea of social business/entrepreneurship in Austria and founding a platform for (potential) social entrepreneurs/enterprises for networking and getting in touch for the exchange of ideas.

About 150 participants from different countries in the region were extensively discussing the “new” upcoming topic of sustainable entrepreneurship. New events were discussed and the start of different network-initiatives in the near future has been focused.
